More Able Project

Masterful Mentality

Following two successful more able girls projects, that built on the centenary of women getting the right to vote, our more able project in 2020 took a different approach and explored the theme of mental health.  The focus of this work, regardless of the age of the children taking part, took a more academic approach to this topic than might normally be the case and explored themes such as:

  • The neurology involved in risk taking;
  • The connection between philosophy and mental health; and,
  • A field investigation exploring issues of educational pressure.

We were delighted, through this programme, to learn from experts in their field.  Our year 7 and 8 pupils, for example, had the honour to learn about very recent research being pioneered at the University of Birmingham into the link between mental health and philosophy including a history lesson in mental health.  The field investigation detailed above took place at Eton College.

The Masterful Mentality project supported the pupils to develop a positive and solutions-focused approach to their own mental health.  The learning was based on cutting edge research from professionals and academics working in the mental health sector.  But it wasn’t just about helping themselves.  Through the project, the pupils were given a chance to take the lead in promoting positive attitudes to mental health across our family of schools and beyond.
